Do Not Sell Something If You Only Know The Theory Of It !
Written by copydude on March 22nd, 2009
Dear Friend,
I don’t feel much like struggling to write a good post today. I am sorry, as I am sick for the last few days.
So if there is any spelling mistakes I make, please forgive me.
Anyway, in this particular post I’m going to talk about something extremely important in writing sales copy that might be obnoxious, and hard to accept for most people out there.
Before I dive right into what I’m about to tell you, I want you to listen to a story, a true story of me, myself working in my father’s industrial gas company. (Honestly, I really hate working there)
The story goes like this:

As you may or may not know I’m working as a store man in my father’s industrial gas company for about 5 years, and since then I never had the chance to even learn new skills such as being a salesman or working in the admin.
Actually, to be honest with you my father was just one of the share holder of that industrial gas company, the other share holder was my uncle, who is actually controlling most of the business.
And a few months back, my uncle hired a sales girl, which I really hate working with, seriously.
The reason I hate is because, she like to play small little tricks such as asking me to help her carry a very light stuff which my grandmother also can carry. (I feel she think, since she is a sales executive, she should not do this type of carrying job, that’s what most Singaporean Career type women are like in my opinion)
The next reason I hate is, when a customer comes, she will usually do the sales and I’m the one showing how the product works, since the product is usually and mostly operated by a man or a person who is experience, and the worst part is she is taking the full commission for the sales and I get…
Nothing, Absolutely Nothing !
The last reason I hate, is whenever she had a bad mode, she will talk to me like as though she is a boss of that industrial gas company.
So, for so many reason I hate, why didn’t I sound out to my uncle?
The answer is simple: my uncle doesn’t believe in me from the day, I started work, or else I won’t be working as a store man for so many years, right?
So why am I telling you all this, and what has it got to do with writing sales copy?
You see, I once read Gary Halbert’s newsletter, he said if you ever wanted to sell…
Sell Something You Love !
But he had forgotten the second part of the sentence, and that is…
Sell Something You Had Personally Use It, Touch It And Feel It !
You can never sell something that you only know the theory but doesn’t know the practical.
Just as I had said from my story, the sales girl can only sell the theory, but cannot sell the practical, and when she need to show the customer, she will need to find either me or someone else to do it.
Just imagine no one is there to help her, how is she gonna convince the customer?
You see, there are many reviews of product out there on the internet, but believe it or not, most people who wrote the review had never even brought the product and use it for themselves.
It goes the same to most sales copy out there.
So if you ever wanted to write a sales copy for either your product or someone else product, in order to really sell, you will need, not just understand the theory of the product but also use it for your own self, so that you know what’s the emotional feeling is like when you use it.
You must understand, when your prospect read your sales copy, he cannot feel and touch your product, so if you only know the theory of the product, you can only sell the theory of it, but who wants to buy a theory of a product?
If you know the theory and the practical use of the product, eventually you will write what you had experience with it, this in terms will eventually give your prospect the emotional feel of the product.
Here’s something that Gary Halbert said, I feel is a fact and truth everyone need to accept no matter what:
If You Really Want To Know It, You’ve Really Got To Do It !
He went on to say,
“men can never really understand the pain of childbirth, priests cannot comprehend the joys of sex, “normies” can never understand alcoholics, and not one speck of true advertising wisdom has ever been written by a Phd.”
Same goes to you will never understand the emotional feel if you only know the theory and the sales girl will never knew how I feel for doing all the hands on job for her when I get absolutely nothing back.
Stay Frosty,

P.S Here’s an example I feel might just sum up everything I just told you:
Imagine, you are gonna buy an underwear, a sales girl came over, and you ask her which one is more comfortable, guess what’s her reply?
I bet you guess it wrong, but no matter what answer you guess, here’s what usually the sales girl will tell you, she will tell you that type of underwear that sold the most.
Does the rate of the selling product (Underwear) relates to emotional feel (Comfortable)?
